VI FESTIVAL DELS HORTS - COLORS

MONDAY 17/06, 8 PM

PRIMARY COLORS

BLUE

BAPTISTE BAILLY AND DAVID GADEA

For Baptiste Bailly, the artist who, together with percussionist David Gadea, will open the Festival dels Horts, blue inspires peace, waves in the water, and the texture and enveloping softness of a warm Mediterranean summer night. It also represents a journey to a colder, minimalist, and infinite place.
Using his album "Suds" (2021) as a base, and employing controlled improvisation and experimentation, Baptiste and David will also incorporate jazz resources and the "blue note," drawing inspiration from the landscape of the orange groves in a unique recital.

YELLOW

DE SOPRANO Y ARPA

We refer to the Spanish Golden Age as the peak period of Spanish culture in the 16th and 17th centuries. However, if we change our perspective, this era was also a time of dispersion for Muslim and Sephardic populations settled in the territory. The duo De Soprano y Arpa, formed by Quiteria Muñoz and Úrsula Segarra, explores in "Anemocoria" songs that traveled with their singers across the Mediterranean and were preserved by oral tradition. In botany, anemocoria refers to the dispersal of propagules by the wind. This intimate microconcert will take place in the beautiful courtyard of Villa Rosita, presided over by a majestic bougainvillea.

RED

Trois Couleurs: ROUGE
by Krzysztof Kieślowski

In the garden of the Hort dels Montesinos, we have set up an open air cinema to enjoy one of the masterpieces of European cinema from the 1990s. The film "Trois Couleurs: Rouge" is the final film by Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski, an essay on Fraternity, the last motto of the French flag, featuring masterful performances by Irène Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant and a distinctive soundtrack where
composer Zbigniew Preisner reinterprets Ravel's famous "Boléro." Our most cinephile audience will also enjoy a discussion preceding the screening.

VI FESTIVAL DELS HORTS - COLORS

TUESDAY 18/06, 8 PM

SECONDARY COLORS

ORANGE

AMURA

Isabel Julve: vocals, dance, castanets
José 'El Piru': flamenco guitar, ronroco
Matthieu Saglio: cello

Orange is the color of transformation, a balance between the perfection of yellow and the power of red. It is also a symbol of the dynamic and renowned Valencian citrus industry, pioneered by Vicente Cañada Blanch. His philanthropic endeavors led him to found the Fundación Cañada Blanch, which has over 50 years of history and has been the primary private sponsor of our Festival since its beginning. In this edition, they go a step further by presenting a recital with the trio AMURA, composed of three incredibly talented musicians who deliver a performance rooted in popular tradition yet infused with sound experimentation.

PURPLE

MARIA FAUBEL

Maria is local composer, teacher and percussionist. She cultivates the genre of singer-songwriter music to address contemporary social issues such as gender violence, war conflicts, and social injustices, as well as reflective themes about personal relationships. The courtyard of the bougainvillea will be painted purple for a series of microconcerts where she will enchant us with her soft voice and clear, committed messages.

GREEN

ANTONIO GALERA

In his piano compositions, Claude Debussy painted all sorts of natural elements, turning the instrument into a perfect canvas for representing sonic images. "Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l’air du soir / The sounds and scents turn in the evening air" is the title of one of his Preludes, paraphrasing Baudelaire. To close the evening on Tuesday, after strolling through the green, now dark and fragrant, garden of the Huerto de los Montesinos, Antonio Galera, the Festival director, will perform the first book of Debussy's Preludes on the porch of Villa Rosita. Can you imagine a better ending for the second day of the Festival dels Horts?

VI FESTIVAL DELS HORTS - COLORS

WEDNESDAY 19/06, 8 PM

COLORS AND THEIR MEANINGS

ELANA SASSON

Elana Sasson is a vocalist of Iranian/Kurdish origin born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Trained in classical and regional Iranian music with Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat, her voice, of rare purity, breathes new life into the sacred musical traditions of Kurdistan through her own arrangements. Her original compositions oscillate between the East and the West, the traditional and the contemporary, inspired by jazz and Latin rhythms. You will hear Elana accompanied by her saz and with the double bass of Manos Stratis, a fellow Berklee College of Music student, in the
bougainvillea courtyard.

PALOMA CHEN

“In this system, they often steal our color and then say that we are all the same (…) the excuse of not seeing racial 'colors' is actually a limitation of our identity, a desire for us to socially homogenize/dilute/integrate at a very high price.” Paloma Chen is a Valencian poet, writer, journalist, and researcher from a Wenzhounese family. She won the National Award for Living Poetry 'L de Lírica' in 2020. She is the author of the documentary project Crecer en un “chino” (2019), the poetry collection Invocación a las mayorías silenciosas (Letraversal, 2022), and the poetry app Shanshui Pixel Scenes (2023). This year, she will graduate in Philosophy from Fudan University (Shanghai) with a thesis on Confucianism and relational feminism. Paloma will write and recite a poem expressly for our festival, in which, in this edition more than ever, we want to celebrate diversity and difference.

DOUDOU NGANGA

A graduate in Fine Arts in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Doudou Nganga moved to Spain with a scholarship to study at the University of Valencia. Upon arrival, he began his pedagogical work with a clear objective: to propose an approach to African culture, so unknown in our Western society. Doudou is the creator of fantastic initiatives, such as the Lokolé Project, which captures the spirit of "calling for dialogue" of this Central African instrument, and as a musician, he has collaborated and shared the stage with artists and bands such as Manu Chao, Tumani Diabate, Ojos de Brujo, Hugh Masekela, or Femi Kuti. In the garden of the Huerto de Montesinos, we will see him blend his voice with recycled objects, turning them into instruments. His music, intense and direct, draws from his African roots to completely renew them.

MARIANNA PRJEVALSKAYA

Marianna Prjevalskaya is a Spanish pianist of Russian origin with a brilliant artistic career. Winner of the Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Jaén competitions, among other prestigious awards, she has performed in venues such as the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Minato Mirai Hall in Yokohama, the Manuel de Falla Auditorium in Granada, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, or the Weill Hall-Carnegie Hall in New York. Her debut was praised by critic Frank Daykin as "one of the greatest piano recitals of the season" and "an overwhelming demonstration of pianistic maturity" (New York Concert Review). At the Festival dels Horts, she will perform a recital featuring music by Alexander Scriabin, one of the best-known examples of synesthetic composers who associated music, color, and moods. The façade of Villa Rosita will light up in synchrony with the tonalities of the pieces performed by Marianna, thus closing the activities of the festival's third day.

VI FESTIVAL DELS HORTS - COLORS

THURSDAY 20/06, 8PM

FROM BLACK AND WHITE TO ALL COLORS

LUIS FERNANDO PÉREZ

Francisco de Goya illustrated a fantastic and allegorical world in his Caprichos and Disparates, through which he satirized society of the time. Granados, captivated by the character and his work, drew inspiration from him to compose what would become his masterpiece: Goyescas.
Luis Fernando Pérez, the last pianist you will hear at the Festival dels Horts, is heir to Granados' musical tradition and, at the same time, a pioneering musician with extraordinary communicative abilities. A student of Alicia de Larrocha and now a professor at the Marshall Academy - founded by Granados -, he is an ambassador of Spanish music worldwide. Considered by critics as "the renaissance of Spanish piano" (Le Monde) and with accolades such as the Albéniz Medal, the Diapason d'Or, or the Choc de l'Année from Revista Classica, he has performed in venues such as the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, the Moscow Conservatory, the Tokyo Opera City, or the Salle Gaveau in Paris. Welcome to Villa Rosita, Luis Fernando!

LIZ DUST

Villa Rosita welcomes Liz Dust, our most recognized 360-degree drag artist, who, as night falls, will perform and share the stage with the rest of the festival artists in a multicolored party.
Transformist, queer drag, actress, performer, humanist, starlet, and whatever else comes to mind, Liz Dust is an exceptional artist. Her main interest lies in the cultural field, decontextualizing the drag figure and reflecting on it as a personal project. Subversion and surprise are part of her basic ingredients and, on this occasion, we are sure that her interpretations of themes from all styles on the Villa
Rosita stage will excite and entertain you. We will close the Festival dels Horts dedicated to colors with good music and lots of joy!
